As
a mortal, every human loves to leave a mark in the existing world. Unfortunately,
not everyone successfully creates a dent in the universe. Having been brought
up in an orthodox Indian family, I was taught to study a subject or work in a
sector, which is easier for me. People whom I know have constantly given a
notion not to take the road to be a visionary, as they considered the path does
not exist.
The
desire to unleash my potential to leave my foot stamp in the universe started
to fade because of the programmed pessimistic thoughts until a point I read an
aphorism from Dharma Master Shih Cheng Yen from the ‘Jing Si Aphorism – Volume
1’. It says
“Making
vows without taking any action is like plowing a field without planting any
seeds. Both are letting opportunity pass in vain.”
Every
human typically makes vows to achieve in life. The efforts required to live up
to the vows are more essential than the affirmations. An assertion is easy to
make, as it is mere imagination and daydreaming. Everyone looks up to the
successful people in the world and starts dreaming about being fortunate enough
to enter that sleek list. The hard truth is humans tend to forget the number of
battles that the outstanding persons had to face to get into the list.
Dharma
Master Shih Cheng Yen has articulated countless positive and noteworthy
aphorisms through her lectures. With this particular aphorism about making vows
and the ways to achieve it, she gave me a clear set of instructions to achieve
my vision. It was nothing more than taking actions to live up to the vows that
I make. This made me decipher the day-to-day actions that I did and analyze how
it will fulfill my vows.
The
sensibility of Dharma Master’s depicture to make vows with a simple act of
planting seeds is considered extremely simple and a concept that is easy to
understand even to an illiterate. She has compared making vows with that of
plowing a field to portray us the importance of affirmations. However, on a
more considerable note, she tries to imply that planting seeds; which, in this
case, is the attempts or struggle that we have to undergo in order to make the
positive affirmation come true. This straightforward yet powerful aphorism
could easily be related to anyone who is attempting to achieve in life.
On
a personal note, when I started to examine the lives of achievers the actions
that they have taken was very clear that the vows they made. Master Shih Cheng
Yen is paving us the way to be one among them. The path that she emphasizes is
"action." As a graduate student, this 'Still Thought' drives me to
strive hard to help the research community across nations and make this world a
better place to live.
